Anyone can be a victim of flooding unless your house is at the top of a mountain. Floods may seriously damage your property. If you do nothing about it, then you will have soacked and smelly carpeting and furniture, damaged electronics, etc. There are some ways by which you can protect your home from floods.
Protecting in house electrical systems
It is advisable to raise your sockets, switches; circuit breakers, etc. at least one foot above the desired level of flood in your neighborhood. Your water heater and furnace must also be placed a foot above your area’s flood level.
Raising your outdoor equipment
The outdoor equipment like air conditioning units, fuel tanks, generators must be placed above the regional flood level. The generators and electrical power units should not be on the ground.
Changing water valves
You should install an exterior or interior backflow valve so that the sewage doesn’t accumulate in your home during flood. Gate valves are recommended as they have stronger seals and. These valves should be set up on all pipes that enter the house.
Find out the path of water flow around your house
Watch out how water accumulates in your house at the time of an average rainstorm. If you find that lot of water accumulates in the street in front of your house during a normal rainstorm, then you should inform your area’s environmental services department. They will be able to give you suggestions on how to prevent accumulation of water.
Wet-proofing your house
You can install foundation vents in your home so that the water can flow throught the building. This will prevent water from being accumulated inside. At least two vents are needed for each wall.
Even after taking all these preventive measures, you can take some last minute preparations also. You can move your furniture and important belonging to a higher place from the ground, turn off the electricity mains supply and clear off any drains so that water can easily flow out.
